A beautiful playground – The Dromore river at Cootehill
This is the last reach of a spectacular part of the Dromore river which for centuries has divided two historic estates - Bellamont on this south side, and Dartrey across on the north bank. The three mile boundary stretch of the river is a gem, described in the 18th century as “A thousand acres of lake...with hills on each side covered with the most beautiful delicious woods, bring all fairyland to one’s imagination”.
Bellamont is privately owned (currently for sale), while Dartrey is owned by the national forestry company (Coillte). An illustrated history and descriptions of these two estates through which this beautiful river runs is at Link
