NS8735 : Cutting across the collapse

taken 19 years ago, near to Douglas Water, South Lanarkshire, Scotland

Cutting across the collapse
Cutting across the collapse
From near Ponfeigh station on the Lanark to Muirkirk railway line, a branch climbed away to serve Douglas Colliery, which closed about 1967. The cutting through which the branch reached the colliery can be seen by the tree in the background. Nearer the camera, however, the collapse of the pit's underground galleries has resulted in slumping and subsidence at surface level, obliterating the former trackbed.
