Eshiels Tunnel
Eshiels Tunnel
The Peebles to Galashiels railway line passed under the A72 main road about a mile outside the former town at a very acute angle, necessitating a short tunnel. After the railway closed in 1962, this eastern end remained open, though vegetation did its best to hide it, but the approach cutting at the other end was infilled, burying the western portal. Much of the former railway on towards Cardrona had already become a walkway and in the last few years, the west end of the tunnel has been dug out to allow the walkway to be extended nearer Peebles and to provide a safer crossing of the busy road above.
