Shonegawna Castle: dry moat
Shonegawna Castle (Siadhan na Gamhna-the Fairy Mound of the Calves)

The image shows the dry moat which surrounds the 'island' on which stands the remains of the castle.

It possibly started out as a crannog in ancient times and possibly taken over by the Normans (probably Jordans) in the 12/13 century as it seems to have been converted into a motte and bailey. This would have been before the Jordans got around to building nearby Ballylahan Castle.
