Shonegawna Castle: view of the perimeter walls from the summit
This image shows the remains of the perimeter wall of the motte and bailey castle.
This view from the summit of the castle shows remains of the stone wall which can be seen running across the centre of the image with the dry moat behind and below.
Shonegawna Castle (Siadhan na Gamhna-the Fairy Mound of the Calves)
It possibly started out as a crannog in ancient times and possibly taken over by the Normans (probably Jordans) in the 12/13 century as it seems to have been converted into a motte and bailey. This would have been before the Jordans got around to building nearby Ballylahan Castle.
