Rathlin Island at the bird reserve
Rathlin Island, 6 miles off the coast of Co Antrim opposite Ballycastle, is Northern Ireland's only inhabited off-shore island with a resident population of around 100. During the summer months this increases with the influx of day-trippers and longer staying visitors arriving by ferry from Ballycastle. The Island is popular with ornithologists because of its large bird colonies, especially puffins.

It was in a cave on Rathlin that Robert The Bruce reputedly had his historic encounter with the spider which inspired him to continue his struggle for Scotland's freedom around 1306.

In 1987 an equally famous though unscheduled visitor was Richard Branson when he crashed his hot-air balloon close to the island as he neared the end of his record-breaking trans-Atlantic flight. Marconi established the world's first commercial wireless telegraphy link between Rathlin and Ballycastle on 6th July 1898.
