The Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal

The sign painted on the wall of the hotel, depicting the Youghal lighthouse, commemorates the fact that Sir Walter Raleigh served two terms as Mayor of Youghal in 1586 & 1587. He planted the first potatoes he brought from the New World at his home in Myrtle Grove and they subsequently became the staple diet of the Irish.
