There are a scatter of unusual rock formations in this square, one of which is topped by Brochel Castle. These are interpreted as volcanic vents comprised of shattered blocks of Torridonian sandstone. They date from the early Palaeogene period (a.k.a. early Tertiary) when the basalt lavas and gabbro and granite intrusions of neighbouring Skye were forming.
