John Kelly Limited, the Belfast ship owners and coal importers, was part of the Stephenson Clarke shipping group but retained its own identity. In 1990 it was absorbed with its ships re-named. Traditionally Kellys had used the names of Ulster townlands. Stephenson Clarke used the names of towns and villages in Sussex. The photograph shows the port bow of the “Ballygrainey” J3475 : A Kelly's "coal boat" at Belfast, at Queen’s Quay, where the vessel was in the process of having her name changed to “Cowdray” J3474 : The "Cowdray" at Belfast (2). J3474 : From "Ballygrainey" to "Cowdray", Belfast (1990-2) shows the new name on the stern.
John Kelly Limited, Belfast. Coal merchant and former shipowner
