SE3231 : Thwaite Putty Mills, steam day
taken 31 years ago, 4 km SE of Leeds, England
Thwaite Putty Mills, steam day.
My own rather flat version. The 1947 Butters Brothers steam Derrick crane was actually in steam although rather inactive in this view. The mills were latterly putty and whiting mills and the range of kit is most impressive.
I was present at a very early meeting to discuss the preservation of this site when the Yorkshire Branch of the Northern Mill Engine Society was one of the interested parties. Indeed the NMES stored engine parts here for a while (I was on a lorry delivering some of them) but were eventually forced to relocate. Mill engines really didn't fit in here conceptually, although it had originally been hoped to include a museum of mill engines on site. If any geographers can add anything to the above account I would be interested.
