These are the battles in which Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Unett fought in the Crimea: Alma and Inkermann 1854, Sebastopol 1855. The names are inscribed on a memorial obelisk in St Philip's churchyard, Birmingham. Lt-Col. Unett, a Staffordshire man, was mortally wounded in the siege of Sebastopol when leading the British column in the final assault on the Redan. His journal and sketchbook, in the care of the Staffordshire County Record Office, give an insight into the realities of war before its mechanisation in the twentieth century.
