Pre-turnpike guide stoop at Ackworth
This stoop is an eighteenth century guide-post as required by the West Riding justices. Its position suggests that the old road ran down the side road whose junction the stoop is sited by, and thence on to Wragby and Wakefield. The Highways Act 1733 finally compelled the justices to ensure that these were placed by 'cross-highways', so this cross-roads was that to Wakefield and its junction with the Barnsley to Pontefract road (ancient long before it was turnpiked)
