TQ2677 : Former Lots Road Power Station, from the Thames
taken 11 years ago, near to Chelsea, Kensington And Chelsea, England
Also known as Lots Road Power Station, since it is located on Lots Road, where Chelsea Creek joins the Thames near what is now known as Chelsea Harbour.
It was opened in 1904 to supply power to the London Underground system which was powered by steam until that time. Originally coal fired, the power station was converted to oil fired in the 1960s (at which time two of its four chimneys were removed) and then to gas fired in the 1970s, thanks to the discovery of North Sea oil.
The power station closed in 2002 and is now at the centre of a massive waterside commercial and retail redevelopment scheme.
