Cochrane Steam Hammer, Chatham Dockyard
Anchors were made by the process of forging. Metal bars were heated in a furnace, joined together and hammered into shape by anchor smiths. Steam hammers, introduced in the 1840s enabled larger anchors, and other metal objects, to be forged in the smithery.

This single-pedestal 30cwt steam hammer dates from the 1950s. It is painted light green, as were most of the yards tools during the 20th century.

The 19th century warship HMS Gannet (TQ7569 : Chatham Dockyard, HMS Gannet) is in number 4 dry dock, behind the hammer. To the right, is the corner of one of the large covered slips.
Chatham Dockyard

The Chatham Dockyard's history dates back to 16th century and earlier. For centuries it was at the forefront of shipbuilding, and industrial and architectural technology and for 414 years, it provided over 500 ships to the Royal Navy. At its height the site covered over 400 acres.

The dockyard closed in 1984, and the now a 84 acre section of the site is a visitor attraction managed by the Chatham Historic Dockyard
Trust.
