This small cottage hidden in the bracken on the lane leading north-west from Laragh Bridge to Oldbridge and L. Dan in Co Wicklow is historically important in the annals of An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel Association. It opened in the first year of the Association, 1931 (though in fact it replaced a very short-lived hostel in a barn by L. Dan), and housed eight men. It was twinned with women's accommodation in the grounds of Laragh house, (qv) almost a mile further north. The two hostels closed in 1936, when the well-known Glendaloch schoolhouse hostel was opened. Please contact if you have any tales to tell of old hostels like this.
