Arthur's Seat is very significant in the history of geology because it was studied by James Hutton (1726-1797). He is regarded as the father of modern geology.
Just north of the cleft of Cat Nick is NT2673 : Cat Nick intrusion. A vertical intrusion of basalt cuts into both the older Salisbury Craigs intrusion and the underlying sandstones. This group on the track Radical Road are looking up at the intrusion.
