J3374 : The Titanic Memorial, Belfast (2013-1)
taken 11 years ago, near to Belfast, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland
A memorial garden, incorporating the existing Titanic memorial statue (unveiled in 1920), on the eastern side of the City Hall, facing Donegall Square East.
It was officially opened on 15 April 2012 – the 100th anniversary of the sinking and includes 15 bronze plaques showing, in alphabetical order, the names of the 1,512 who were lost.
The photographs submitted by me appear as a matter of record only. I have no connection with Belfast City Council or any organisation connected with the study or history of the ship. I have no access to any official records and cannot answer any questions related to the vessel or its passengers.
Belfast City Hall was built in 1896/1906, by H&J Martin Link to a design by Brumwell Thomas. It replaced the White Linen Hall (1785-1896) Link (“white” refers to the colour of the linen rather than the building) on the same site in the middle of Donegall Square. Apart from its architectural merits and being the seat of the City Council it tends to be the place from where directions are given.
