A Virgin 'Pendolino' train at Platform 5 of Preston Railway Station
A Virgin Train consisting of a Class 390 'Pendolino' nine-car electric multiple unit, forming a service from Edinburgh Waverley to Birmingham New Street, pauses at Platform 5 of Preston station. Virgin services between Edinburgh and Birmingham are more usually operated using Class 221 'Voyager' diesel units. Note the wonderful overall roof dating from the 1870s and also the recently built multi-storey station car park to the right. This was constructed on the site of the old 'East Lancashire' platforms which curved away to the south east and closed in the 1960s.
