The Ulster Bank, Comber
See J5979 : The Ulster Bank, Donaghadee. The Comber branch of the Ulster Bank, at The Square. In the 1970’s it was a sub-office of Newtownards and occupied ground-floor premises in the (now demolished) picture house J4569 : Supermarket, Comber at Castle Street. Back in 1836 there was a branch (under an agent) in the town which came under scrutiny from head office when, despite instructions, several weeks passed without the books being balanced. Matters came to a head in 1837 when the agent brought the safe and books to Belfast, by horse and cart, walked into the directors’ room, threw down a bunch of keys saying “There’s your branch” and departed. My thanks to another member for this insight into banking history. Continue to J1460 : The Ulster Bank, Moira.
