Experimental ponds in a ditch at Woodbastwick Marshes NNR
During the very late 1970s about 150m of this ditch was split into short (approx 10m) sections with wooden dams by ecologists from the University of East Anglia. This created a series of experimental ponds that were used, for a while, to investigate the effects of water chemistry - particularly plant nutrients such as Phosphorous and Nitrogen - upon the ecology of the ponds. These experiments sought to mimic the post-war changes that had occurred within many of the Norfolk Broads.
Whether by chance, design or natural factors the experimental ponds had developed quite varied plant communities by 1986 after they fell into disuse. This section was choked by the floating plant water soldier (Stratiotes aloides). Many sections were barren apart from fringes of reed (Phragmites australis)
Link or contained large amounts of submerged plants such as hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) and ivy leaved duckweed (Lemna trisulca).
