SH7877 : Conwy Suspension Bridge from the castle
taken 15 years ago, near to Gyffin, Conwy, Wales
Conwy Suspension Bridge from the castle
This splendid suspension bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and was completed in 1826. Originally built as a road bridge - one of the first such suspension bridges in the World - it no longer carries traffic but is open to pedestrians. Its supporting towers were designed to echo the turrets of the great castle that it leads to.
It now spans the River Conwy flanked on either side by more modern bridges; to the south is Robert Stephenson's Wrought Iron Tubular railway bridge, while to the north the A547 crosses on a rather bland concrete structure. The main route along the north Welsh coast however, the A55, now burrows beneath the river in a tunnel about half a mile further north.
