Gorsedd stone circles consist of twelve pillars arranged in a circle with a large flattened stone in the centre. The Dolgellau Gorsedd stones were set up in 1948 by the Gorsedd, the organising officials of the National Eisteddfod, and a ceremony held to officially proclaim Dolgellau as the venue for the 1949 National Eisteddfod of Wales. This site was chosen because it possessed the large open field and plenty of local parking. As there was no circle there, a stone circle was created from local stone.
