SK9219 : Start of the Witham detour

taken 10 years ago, near to South Witham, Lincolnshire, England

Start of the Witham detour
Start of the Witham detour
From its source about 3 miles to the west SK8818 : Source of the River Witham?, the River Witham has been running more or less directly towards its mouth on the Wash near Boston TF3938 : Nearing the mouth of the River Witham. Were it to continue on this course, it would reach Boston in only 30 miles. At this point, however, the river decides to bend to the north (left), and run all the way up to Lincoln before turning again, south-east to Boston; thereby lengthening its journey to over 85 miles.
