Newport - County Mayo - Seven Arch Railway Viaduct over Black Oak River
Newport - County Mayo - Seven Arch Railway Viaduct over Black Oak River
Location is east of N59 Bridge over the Newport River. View is to the northeast. The Wesport Railway Line was extended to Achill Sound in the 1890s via this 7-arch stone viaductover the Black Oak / Newport River. The last train ran on this line in the autumn of 1937 because of the development of roads in the 1930s. This disused viaduct was recently restored as part of the 'Great Western Greenway', the longest off-road cycling & walking route in Ireland. St Patrick's Church is shown in the upper left corner of the photo.
