Ironwork detail, Tate's Avenue bridge, Belfast
Ironwork detail, Tate's Avenue bridge, Belfast
Detail from the fancy ironwork on the northern side of the bridge. The name “Colville” is clearly visible at top right. I take this to be a reference to Colville’s of Lanarkshire LinkExternal link. The Millfield Foundry, Belfast is represented too J3272 : Foundry inscription, Belfast. See also NS7265 : Skyline from Summerlee.
Tate's Avenue bridge, Belfast
Tate’s Avenue originally crossed the GNR(I)’s Belfast – Dublin railway by a level crossing. The section of the line between Belfast and Lisburn opened in 1839. The present bridge replaced the level crossing.
