Old Steam cranes, Stanton Moor
Old Steam cranes, Stanton Moor
Stanton Moor was worked for high quality gritstone for many years, and, in fact, still is. Over the years, these quarries have attained some considerable size and stone extraction was assisted by many large steam cranes. In the 1960s these machines lay rusting and abandoned and, in a few case, it appeared that a spot of oil and some sticks and coal would see them come to life once more. (Having tried the latter as a youngster I can vouch for the fact this did not work!). In what year they were taken for scrap, I know not, and although they have now long since vanished from the scene, the quarries they served are still very much in evidence.
