Whitehead Memorial Clock Tower and Gardens, Bury
These were a gift to the town from Henry Whitehead, a local industrialist in memory of his brother Walter, an eminent surgeon. The Portland stone clock tower was opened in June 1914 by Sir Frederick Treves (the doctor involved with the "Elephant Man" case). It is unusual in being designed with a copper ogee roof and belfry (but no bells) in a medieval style.
The gardens were created from the grounds of a former lunatic asylum.
