Duntreath Castle and the Blane Valley
Duntreath Castle and the Blane Valley
The view eastwards from the slopes of Dumgoyach over Duntreath Castle towards Blanefield and The Strathblane Hills, forming the Western end of the Campsies. All approximately 12 miles or 20km north of Glasgow. Duntreath Castle, home of the Edmonstone family almost continually since, it is said, since the 14th Century. It was the birthplace of Alice Keppel, née Edmonstone, mistress of King Edward VII. The Edmonstone family had a railway halt installed at the Castle, on the Glasgow to Aberfoyle Railway line, which facilitated King Edward's ready access to Alice! The railway, now removed, last saw traffic in 1963 but was being run down since 1951. The course of the line cannot be seen clearly in the photograph, but was screened by the trees which may be seen close to the ornamental ponds in the Castle Gardens.
