Disused "Bull Drove" public swimming pool
Disused "Bull Drove" public swimming pool
Disused outdoor public swimming pool, formerly known as "Bull Drove Swimming Pool", as Garnier Road was formerly Bull Drove. Now very overgrown and silted up. Look up 'Bull Drove swimming pool' online and there's a photo from 1905 on the Hampshire Cultural Trust website, showing the pool in working order.

Originally I thought this was the site of 'Gunners Hole', helpfully someone spotted the mistake and let me know. Previous (wrong) caption read: "Long disused outdoor swimming pool of Winchester College, now overgrown and silted up. This footbridge survives on concrete supports at the downstream end of the pool, although the wooden boards a well-rotten. Below is a long descriptive quote from Roger Deakin's non-fiction book "Waterlog", published in 2000: "[Gunner's Hole] was called after the Rev. H. Gunner, one of the college chaplains. There used to be a wide arc of changing sheds following the curve of the river bank, thatched huts on an island, and a system of sluices to regulate the natural flow of the water. Gunner's Hole was about a hundred yards long and twelve yards wide, and the stretch of river was dredged of mud and concreted along its banks towards the end of the nineteenth century. It even had a handrail around the area of a 'high diving erection with four stages and two springboards', as the Public School's Handbook called it in 1900, continuing enthusiastically: 'Gunner's Hole is now second to none as a bathing place in England. Here, under the shade of the limes, are the best features of a swimming bath and a river rolled into one.'"" The correct location of Gunners Hole is probably the 'banana shaped' feature further to the north (nearer the college) at grid reference SU483287.
