The 'Marmion Well'
The 'Marmion Well'
On the roadside at Branxton. The well was reconstructed in the 19th century for Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford. It is inscribed with a quotation from Sir Walter Scott's 'Marmion' which is set at the time of the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. The original well was used as a setting for Marmion and is sometimes known as Sybil's Well. The 'keystothepast' website describes the original well as being known as Sybil's Well. In fact Sybils well is in a different location and has a clearer inscription upon it. As in the following photograph.
