County Mayo - Westport House Grounds - Statue of Grace O'Malley (1530-1603)
View is to the northeast from the east side of the road to Westport House between the Carrowbeg River and the Coach House. This bronze statue is a replica of the alabaster statue inside Westport House. No other images exist of the 16th Century Pirate Queen of County Mayo, Grainne Ni Mhaille, better known as Grace O'Malley, who owned a castle here, whose remains became the foundation of the 18th century Westport House, privately owned by her descendants, the Browne family. Granuaile ruled the seas of Mayo with her army of men and didn't back down to Queen Elizabeth I in a face-toface meeting in 1593. She was also a wife and a mother, and certainly led a full life.
