SZ0481 : The Ballard Fault

taken 19 years ago, near to Studland, Dorset, England

The Ballard Fault
The Ballard Fault
A rare chance to see a geological fault. The chalk on the right side is in horizontal strata, whilst on the left the strata are vertical. In between is a tight bend in the strata. This is the Ballard fault, caused by a buckling of the layers of chalk at some time in the past. It is why the chalk on Purbeck forms a narrow ridge, but is flattish for the stacks of Old Harry. Without the Ballard Fault, Purbeck would not have both Corfe Castle and Old Harry.
