County Mayo - Achill Island - Deserted Village - Derelict Cottages
View is to the northeast from the ancient path below the village along the north side of the ancient path. The Deserted village consists of 80-100 roofless stone cottages in different states of ruin, The walls were built of unmortared stone. Each house consisted of one room that was used as a kitchen, living room, bedroom and possibly as a stable for the family's animals. People lived here for many years. When the Famine struck in 1845, most of the families moved to the nearby seaside village of Dooagh to fish for food, while others emigrated. Family descendants from Dooagh continued to use the village as a 'booley village', whereby teenage boys & girls would take cattle to graze on the hillsides during the summer season, and stay in the abandoned cottages. The custom of 'boolying' continued until the 1940s.
