Colchester Icons
One icon seen through another, in the foreground is part of the Balkerne gate the largest Roman gateway that survives in the U.K. Built about 70AD as the western entrance through the Roman Wall large sections of which still survive. The water tower is “Jumbo” (the weather vane depicts an elephant) in 1882 the “Essex County Standard” railed against this blot on the landscape for despoiling the High Street. Redundant as a water tower since the 1970’s it has failed to find a lasting new use. Now the same “County Standard” vigorously defends jumbo from all those who would have him demolished or its appearance altered too significantly.
