The Crescent, West Town, Hayling Island
For me this picture sums Hayling Island up. A place that never really became what it wanted to be and has yet to decide what it is. Work on building Norfolk Crescent started in 1825, just after the first road bridge was built to the island (before that you had to go by boat or Wadeway). Only the eastern half and one house of the western part was ever completed, plus the white-painted Royal Hotel beyond. Hayling's aspirations had faded before they even got going! See
Link . Today, Hayling is part dormitory suburb (with perhaps the worst possible road access) and part seaside resort (with little to attract holidaymakers en masse).
