The old church is to the rear of the present church J3734 : Church of Ireland, Maghera, Co Down (2). It is thought to date from the 13th century. The west gable and the north walls still stand at their original height. The church stands in a circular walled enclosure known as a monastic cashel. There are burial slabs from the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods. Their inscriptions are now completely illegible.
