Coastal unconformity
At the west end of the car park are various signs advising of hazards attending the cliffs. The larger part of these cliffs are formed from the Cretaceous aged chalk, specifically here the 'Tarrant Chalk Member' of the 'Culver Chalk Formation' of the 'White Chalk Subgroup' of the 'Chalk Group' - that information courtesy of the British Geological Survey's 1:50,000 geological map no 319/334 'Lewes & Eastbourne', published in 2006. Overlying it are the basal beds of the Palaeogene aged glauconitic pebbly sands assigned to the 'Lambeth Group' and which are from either the 'Woolwich Formation' or 'Reading Formation', or possibly both - the map doesn't distinguish between them. There was a significant time interval between the deposition of the Cretaceous strata and the overlying Palaeogene strata during which erosion of the chalk took place. The boundary can be seen to be uneven.
