Barley Cove Beach
Barley Cove Beach
Colleen and I take a drive out to Mizen Head lighthouse. Along the way we pass Barley Cove Beach. Dough (Barley Cove) is located to the far west of the Mizen Peninsula, in close proximity to Mizen Head; Crookhaven, Goleen and Schull are the nearest villages. Barley Cove Beach forms part of the Barley Cove to Ballyrisode Point Special Area of Conservation and Sheep’s Head to Toe Head Special Protected Area. Lissagriffin saltmarsh and machair grassland is located to the north of the beach. This tidal saltmarsh lake with sand dune system is one of the finest locations in Europe to find birds such as stray American waders, as well as vagrant pipits and larks. The rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly is present here from mid-June.
