Glenwhilly — a long way from homes
Dr Beeching suggested that Glenwhilly station on the Ayr to Stranraer line in south-west Scotland should be closed as insufficient local passengers were using it, and one can perhaps see why in this photograph. It finally closed in September 1965 but even in Victorian times its usefulness was questioned as it was briefly closed in 1882 and again in 1886. A loop line has been left for trains to pass one another on this otherwise single line and a signal box remains to operate the points. Surely this must be the loneliest signaller on Britain's railway network.
