Sluice gates upstream of Otley Mills
Ackroyds Mill were established as worsted textile spinners in Otley in 1815 and finally closed in 1963. The water supply for the mill was taken from the River Wharfe where a weir was built upstream of the mill to raise the level sufficiently to allow water to be taken off to the mill. This photo shows the old sluice gates upstream of the weir which were used to control the flow of water to the mill. Further downstream a second set of sluice gates were used to allow the water to flow back in to the river. The weir was demolished around the time that the mill closed in 1963. There is a link to view a picture the old weir from the air in 1926 here:-
