World Robotic Sailing Championship 2014

In September 2014, Galway hosted the World Robotic Sailing Championship, a competition involving teams from various research teams around the world, including ones from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, Aberystwyth University, the US Naval Academy, University of Porto (Portugal), Åland University of Applied Sciences (Sweden) and ENSTA Bretagne in Brest (France).

The competition involved races between autonomous motorboat or sailing boats (in separate categories), over a series of days, with tasks such as positioning, speed in different conditions, accuracy, obstacle avoidance, target tracking, endurance and cooperation. It enabled the various teams to test and demonstrate (and in some cases develop) their boats in real conditions.

At the end of the event there was a separate "bottle boat" challenge, involving boats made from plastic bottles.
