TF6204 : Wimbotsham St. Mary's church
taken 14 years ago, near to Wimbotsham, Norfolk, England
Wimbotsham St. Mary's church
The Norman north and south doorways are indicative of the time this lovely church was built. Nave and chancel are of carstone with a mix of limestone, giving it the appearance of a nutty gingerbread cake. The south doorway has two pairs of decorated engaged shafts, and the north one pair. The Victorian apsidal end of the chancel has a splendid corbel-table at the eaves which appears to be original. In the nave is a round Victorian font, and stone pulpit. A nice angle piscina and the rood loft stairs have been retained after much interior restoration, which included the construction of the apsidal end to the chancel already mentioned. A 19th c. mensa slab sits on six ornate columns. The lovely bench-ends are the icing on the cake, carved with strange animals and the occasional human figure.
