Armagh Gaol

Part of B-Wing is on the left with the area known as the Circle directly ahead; the building on the right is a modern addition, possibly kitchens. Unlike Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, there was no execution cell in Armagh Gaol J3375 : Execution Cell, Crumlin Road Gaol. Those condemned to die within the prison (the last in 1904) were led outside and executed on a (temporary) scaffold in this area - just to the left of the man in the grey coat. Like other jails, those who died in the prison were buried in the grounds in unmarked plots.

Armagh Gaol

Former gaol in the centre of Armagh which was opened around 1780 and closed in 1986 H8745 : Armagh Prison.. The sites at Link , Link and Link will give useful historical information. There have been plans to completely refurbish the buildings, possibly as a hotel, but, at the time of writing, no redevelopment looks likely in the immediate future.
