King John had a castle here by 1215, and the internal twelve-sided shell keep (rare in Ireland) may date from that period. The view here is of the SE corner with its entrance gatehouse having a passage with a portcullis groove and flanked by two U-shaped towers. The SW corner beyond to the left has a tower over thirty feet in height, and diameter. The FitzGeralds were in possession continuously from 1285 until 1535 when it was captured by Lord Deputy Skeffington. It was then retained by the Earl of Ossory until the Crown assumed direct control in 1543. After its capture and recapture during the wars of the 1640s, it finally fell to Cromwell in 1650.
