This once fine five storey tower has been completely engulfed in ivy, its features now only visible in outline only. At one time at least the topmost part of the gable and chimney-stacks were visible, sadly no longer. Known also by its alternative name of Ballymullen, much of it collapsed in February 1981. The unfortunate Sheriff of Clare, Turlough O'Brien, held Ballymullen in 1570, and was hanged in Galway in 1581, likewise his son Tadhg in 1596, both for various misdemeanours. The O'Briens continued to hold the castle until the 1650s when it was confiscated and given to Philip Bigoe.
