Castles of Munster: Castlehyde, Cork
Difficult to imagine that this much reduced tower overlooking the River Blackwater once stood five storeys high when it was a Condon stronghold known as Carriganeide. It was named after Arthur Hyde to whom it was granted in 1588, after being mentioned in 1587 as leased to John Meaghe. There is a room within a triangular spur built on to the NE corner containing a fireplace and gunloops, that is also mentioned in 1587. The castle has lost its southern half, and what remains stands high above the north side of the river beside a later mansion, now the home of Michael Flatley of "Riverdance" fame. (my thanks to Vivienne O'Grady for arranging access).
