Cahir Priory, Tipperary (1)
The Priory of St Mary in Cahir was a house of Augustinian Canons that was probably founded in the last decade of the C12. The priory also served the town as the parish church, and so at its dissolution in April 1540 it was not forfeited to the Crown. The chancel of the church survives with a good row of C15 single-light windows, and an east window with carved heads. Most spectacular is the simply massive residential tower that is probably C17 in date, using the stone of the nave and the residential buildings of the priory.
