The Pier Buoy, New Brighton
The Pier Buoy, New Brighton
This buoy marks the position of the entrance to the former New Brighton Pier, which was demolished in 1978 and was of similar purpose to those, which are still around the coast of Britain, at other seaside resorts. However, the pier also served as the mooring for a landing stage for ferries to and from Liverpool. Even with the recent redevelopment further west along the promenade, New Brighton is still something of a shadow of its former self. Not only has the pier gone, but also the tower, the ballroom, the funfair and then, finally, the open air swimming pool in 1990.
