The 'Ocean Crest' departing Bangor
The current 'Bangor Boat' Link
the 'Ocean Crest' Link
departing Bangor harbour with a swimmer bound for an attempt at the North Channel - he later entered the water at Donaghadee aiming to reach the Scottish coast near Portpatrick (and was successful, leaving Donaghadee at about 0700 and reaching Scotland at about 2315!).
Attempts to swim the North Channel have been happening for many years but appear to have grown in popularity recently due to the so-called "Ocean's Seven" Link
long distance open-water swims (the North Channel is widely regarded as the hardest of these). The two pilots for swimmers are normally Brian Meharg in the 'Bangor Boat' Link
as seen here and Quinton Nelson Link
, usually in the 'Guy and Clare Hunter' J5980 : The "Guy and Clare Hunter", Donaghadee (July 2014). Others are also used and on this morning another swimmer was also leaving Bangor - see J5082 : The 'Hirta' at Bangor.
