The Afon Rheidol makes a 90-degree turn from north to west in the gorge below Pontarfynach/Devil's Bridge. This is a result of the Rheidol tapping into the existing river bed of the Teifi due to glacial action Link . An intermediate plateau has formed some 40m above the bottom of the gorge downstream of this bend in the river, providing enough room for a cottage and some pasture Link . Our cottage was built as a low impact house, using materials from the surrounding area, especially timber from the wood below. Sneakily, the original owner claimed it was an animal shelter, then lived in it for 4 years to claim permission to turn it into a dwelling
